The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
