Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
