Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
