Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
